Graham Fitch studied at the Royal College of Music in the 1970s and has performed all over the world, notably in the United States, where the New York Times described his playing as ‘an unalloyed pleasure’, and South Africa, where he was keyboard professor at the University of Cape Town. Now based in London, he gives masterclasses and workshops all over the world, and regularly writes about all aspects of piano-playing and musical style. The Goldberg Variations, which he has played many times, is regarded as one of the pinnacles of the keyboard repertoire and the most ambitious composition ever written for the harpsichord, as well as the most important set of variations of the Baroque era. The work opens with the theme, a beautiful aria, which is heard again at the end of the hour-long piece, sounding strikingly arresting in its simplicity after its thirty variations. How the piece came by its name is related in an early biography of Bach. The story goes that Bach was commissioned by his pupil Goldberg to write a piece for Goldberg to play to his employer, a Count in the court of Saxony, who suffered from insomnia. Unfortunately this entertaining story is thought spurious by scholars mainly due to the lack of any dedication to Goldberg in the score. The piece will be performed on the piano; there will be no interval.
